Biotia Secures $9M to Scale Testing for Chronic UTIs

Biotia

Biotia has raised $9 million in financing for its BIOTIA-ID Urine Test, which detects the cause of complicated and recurrent cases of urinary tract infections.

Investors included VillageMD Co-Founders Tim Barry and Dr. Clive Fields, Convergent Ventures, DigitalDx Ventures, Cloquet Capital Partners, Continuum Health Ventures,  I-Lab Angels, EGB Capital, Leawood Venture Capital, Red Bear Angels, and Red Bear Ventures

Available to clinicians and patients nationwide, Biotia’s urine-based test uses advanced genetic sequencing to identify the causes of hard-to-diagnose and treatment-resistant infections. The company reports 97% sensitivity and 99% specificity.

Following its Series A, the latest funding will support development of new women’s health diagnostics, expansion into orthopedics, and growth of Biotia’s New York City lab.

“This funding enables us to do what matters most: expand advanced diagnostics available for patients suffering from chronic infections who have been failed by standard laboratory methods,” said Niamh O’Hara, PhD, CEO and Co-Founder of Biotia. “We are using this capital to expand our test menu, pursue reimbursement, and get these tools into the hands of clinicians — so that more patients get better and faster answers.”

Expanding its platform, Biotia has also added new board members and providers, spanning multiple healthcare specialties, including VillageMD’s Barry and Fields and Kindra Founder Catherine Balsam-Schwaber.

“The esteemed leaders supporting Biotia at this stage are a testament to the importance of what we are building as we work to make clinical metagenomic solutions rapidly accessible for patients,” said Chris Mason, PhD, Global Director and Co-Founder of Biotia. “Their experience and perspective will be invaluable to accelerate our next phase of growth, expand our diagnostic applications to new markets, and help more patients.”
