The Health Revolution Congress in Barcelona is a key event in the digital health world in Europe. This year, the summit held on May 16th at the beautiful Recinto Modernista brought together 2500 attendees from all corners of the healthcare innovation ecosystem: Startups, large corporations, investors, researchers and healthcare leaders. This year I had the opportunity to attend, and was fortunate enough to deliver the keynote focused on women’s health.
During my time in Spain and at the congress I also took some time to explore and meet quite a few of the leaders from across the local femtech ecosystem, some of which recently made the news with launches, raises or partnership announcements.What definitly stood out for me during the conference is that Barcelona has an exceptionally vibrant healthcare innovation ecosystem, with bold ideas and impactful entrepreneurial talent. A few startups especially caught my eye as I was learning more about women's health innovationin Spain and today I’d like to introduce you to some of them.
- INNITIUS develops cutting-edge medical devices to improve labor diagnostics. Their flagship product, Fine Birth, uses torsional waves to differentiate between true and false pre-term labor, aiming to bring precision to labor monitoring practices.
- WOOM (acquired by Apricity) provides a comprehensive platform for reproductive health, offering tools to monitor menstrual cycles and optimize fertility windows, supporting women throughout their fertility journey.
- Ailin offers a range of tests, including stress levels, essential vitamins, weight control, female fertility, testosterone levels, athletic performance, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV. Each test is designed for easy at-home sample collection and comes with all necessary materials.
- Specializing in menstrual pain relief, Moonai offers a unique app that employs neuroscience-based sound therapy to alleviate discomfort during menstruation, providing a non-invasive alternative to traditional pain management methods.
- Lullaai's innovative app utilizes AI to enhance baby sleep quality by analyzing sleep patterns and generating soothing sounds, designed to help infants achieve better sleep.
- Hybrid health company LactApp combines AI technology with expert lactation consultation to offer personalized support for new mothers, helping them navigate breastfeeding challenges with features for tracking and answering lactation-related queries.
- Arediana creates specialized nutritional supplements aimed at boosting women’s health, focusing on enhancing memory, energy, and physical performance with targeted, health-supporting ingredients.
- BlueBox is revolutionizing breast cancer screening with a new device that detects early signs of breast cancer in urine. This technology offers a pain-free, radiation-free, and low-cost alternative to traditional methods, significantly improving accessibility and convenience for early detection. Designed to fill a critical gap in cancer screening for women aged 20 to 49, BlueBox aims to make regular breast cancer screening a viable and routine practice.
- DOMMA addresses menopause symptoms through specially formulated supplements and functional foods, providing women with natural options to manage symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, and fatigue.
These Spanish femtech startups are leading the way - both locally and increasingly internationally - in the quest to advance women’s health on a global level. 'Spanish language first' allows those focused on consumer health to expand to the large, and underserved Latin American markets once solutions have been validated locally.
As I already briefly mentioned what’s especially impressive in Spain and especially in Barcelona is the support system that has emerged around Barcelona Health Hub. BHH is a community organization championing healthcare innovation, that brings together stakeholders from across the entire ecosystem. It’s this very ecosystem that I believe can be THE competitive advantage for startups especially in the early stages.
So in conclusion: Spain. An exciting ecosystem. And definitely one to watch in the future.
