US-based Ob Hospitalist Group has launched Obtelecare, a telehealth platform providing virtual maternal-fetal medicine services to hospitals, health systems, and clinics nationwide. The service addresses provider shortages in high-risk pregnancy care through telephonic support, virtual consultations, and remote monitoring.
The platform connects hospitals with maternal-fetal medicine specialists, enabling real-time collaboration between onsite clinical teams and remote MFM experts. Currently, fewer than 2,500 MFMs serve the entire United States, creating significant gaps in care as risk factors for high-risk pregnancies continue to rise.
Obtelecare allows MFM specialists to collaborate with patients, OB-GYNs, hospitalists, nurses, and other onsite providers to develop care plans that are then implemented by local clinical teams. The service aims to enable earlier interventions for high-risk pregnancies while reducing the need for patient transfers.
“Obtelecare represents the next evolution of our mission to ensure every mother has access to the level of care she needs, when she needs it,” said Nick Sacco, President and Chief Operating Officer of OBHG. “This launch represents a meaningful investment in expanding our care model to address a critical gap in maternal-fetal medicine access.”
The service targets communities facing provider shortages or coverage gaps in maternal-fetal medicine. Risk factors for high-risk pregnancies, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and advanced maternal age, are increasing while specialist availability remains limited.
“The rise in high-risk pregnancies has led to a growing demand for MFM specialists, outpacing the current supply of clinicians and creating significant gaps in the availability of MFM services,” said Rebecca Flack, Senior Vice President of Telehealth at OBHG. “For complex pregnancies, timely access to an MFM isn’t just beneficial — it can be lifesaving.”
The platform offers what OBHG describes as a fully customizable and scalable solution that integrates into existing hospital workflows. Obtelecare builds on OBHG’s nearly 20-year history of providing obstetric and midwifery care through its OB hospitalist model.
Ob Hospitalist Group operates as the largest provider of OB/GYNs in the United States, with nearly 2,000 clinicians serving hospitals nationwide. The company partners with hospitals to improve maternal safety, reduce physician burnout, and expand access to obstetric care.
