Spotlight: Eating Disorder Care
Last week Arise, a digital healthcare company enabling comprehensive care for eating disorders launched after raising over $4M in seed funding. The round was led by Greycroft and BBG Ventures with participation from Wireframe Ventures, and several notable angel investors.
Arise plans to bring integrated community and clinical care to people living with disordered eating and eating disorders, which are a category of conditions that can show up in different ways for people. They include binge eating disorder, bulimia, anorexia, rumination disorder, avoidant or restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and other conditions.
Despite their high prevalence (see stats below) only few companies have focused on innovation in eating disorder treatment so far:

- Eating disorders affect at least 9% of the population worldwide.
- Less than 6% of people with eating disorders are medically diagnosed as “underweight.”
- Eating disorders are among the deadliest mental illnesses, second only to opioid overdose.
- 10,200 deaths each year are the direct result of an eating disorder—that’s one death every 52 minutes.
- About 26% of people with eating disorders attempt suicide.
- The economic cost of eating disorders is $64.7 billion every year.
- 80% of an estimated 30 million Americans suffering from an eating disorder don't have access to treatment
- BIPOC are significantly less likely than white people to have been asked by a doctor about eating disorder symptoms.
- BIPOC with eating disorders are half as likely to be diagnosed or to receive treatment.

Report: Value-based Care x MedTech
Deloitte recently released a report on regulatory, technology, and marketplace trends converging to create new opportunities for manufacturers. Despite challenges, medtech companies expressed a strong interest in and an understanding of the potential benefit from value-based contracts. Industry also agreed that data systems, regulatory considerations, and other changes are aligning to create new opportunities.
Some companies are moving quickly to develop the strategic capabilities needed for these arrangements, including value propositions and go-to-market approaches, positioning themselves to seize new opportunities.
The Cost of Having a Baby in the U.S.
The Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) recently released a new analysis that compares three years of health care claims for reproductive-aged women who gave birth comparing them to claims for women who had not given birth. The analysis is based on claims data from large employer health plans in the U.S.
Although not surprising, the analysis found that women who give birth incur nearly $19.000 in additional health costs and pay almost $3.000 more out-of-pocket than those who do not give birth.
Overall the report is full of interesting stats and especially interesting for those interested in the health economic impact of pregnancy, child birth and postpartum care.
