Connected health company Withings has launched U-Scan, an at-home urine analysis device that integrates into toilets to provide continuous health monitoring. The device is now available in Europe and the United States through withings.com, following more than seven years of research and development.

U-Scan fits inside the toilet and automatically collects urine samples using a thermal sensor. The device analyzes samples on-site using biochemical sensors integrated into an interchangeable cartridge. Results are processed directly on the device and transmitted via Wi-Fi to the Withings app within minutes.

“The story of U-Scan began with a simple intuition: urine provides a precise and comprehensive window into our health,” Eric Carreel, founder and chairman of Withings, stated in the press release. “The challenge was to transform that insight into a laboratory so compact it could be integrated directly into a toilet- without changing anyone’s habits.”

Withings offers two versions of the device. U-Scan Nutrio tracks four urinary biomarkers: urinary pH, specific gravity, ketones and vitamin C. The device provides insights on acid-base balance, hydration status, fat metabolism and dietary adequacy.

U-Scan Calci focuses on kidney health by monitoring calcium levels, urinary pH and specific gravity. Kidney stones affect one in ten adults worldwide, and the device tracks parameters associated with stone formation. Excess urinary calcium is the primary driver of kidney stone development.

Each cartridge lasts approximately three months and can be replaced by users. The device includes a charging and cleaning station that completes a full cycle within three hours. The company offers two subscription plans. The Proactive Plan costs $379.95 and includes two to four analyses per week with one cartridge, while the Intensive Plan costs $449.96 and provides five to seven analyses per week with two cartridges. Both plans include a cleaning and charging station and access to Withings+, the company’s premium app service.

Withings+ features include a free nutrition consultation with a registered dietitian through a partnership with Fay Nutrition, an AI-driven health assistant, and personalized insights based on biomarker trends
