Recent surveys from lactation pod developer Mamava, in collaboration with Medela, and women’s supplement brand Legendairy Milk reveal mental health and infrastructure challenges for those breastfeeding.

According to Mamava’s survey of approximately 2,500 breastfeeding parents, many are facing logistical challenges, most notably returning to their careers. While 78% work, only 44% feel supported by their employer. With one-third of respondents lacking a reliable workplace lactation space and 46% unaware of federal workplace policies, many have resorted to feeding or pumping in cars, bathrooms, and storage closets. Beyond finding convenient lactation spaces, respondents reported additional logistical challenges with setup, cleanup, and packing while on the go.

Meanwhile, Legendairy Milk surveyed 1,000 Gen Z and Millennial women, highlighting workplace and emotional stress – 65% of respondents said it was difficult to feed or pump upon returning to work, and 25% believed that respect for their feeding schedule would have made the process easier. Aside from work environments, 60% reported negative treatment for feeding or pumping in public.

With a desire to breastfeed yet mounting pressures, many experienced emotional distress – 58% felt guilt or shame during their breastfeeding journey, and many were anxious about milk supply, schedule demands, and a desire to be perfect.

Amid these challenges, new parents remain highly motivated to breastfeed – 86% said breastfeeding was important, per Legendairy Milk, citing health benefits and bonding with their baby as key motivators, according to Mamava. Already seeking solutions, 88% are more likely to frequent spaces that have lactation areas, underscoring the demand for more accessible breastfeeding infrastructure.
