Software Engineer in Residence Position Description
What is the Residency?
The Software Residency infuses a tried-and-true, principle-driven development process with a people-centric approach to talent development and company growth. This is accomplished through a tenured partnership between ZEAL, an established software development consultancy in the field, and LEARN academy, a prominent workforce skills education institution.
Through an efficient and effective onboarding process under the Software Engineer in Residence begins project work immediately while being mentored and guided by ZEAL’s expert engineers in a collaborative mentorship relationship. Additionally, the Software Engineer in Residence is provided weekly opportunities to cement their learning through educational mentorship opportunities under the guidance of LEARN academy, so that team integration and long-term growth is a success for both the resident(s) and the partnering organization.
How does the Residency work?
Initial 12 Months
The Software Residency is a 12-month development and training program, designed to level up the skills of the Software Engineer in Residence. Employment typically continues after the Software Residency has concluded.
Software Engineers in Residence are Employees of the Company
Software Engineers in Residence are employees of the resident company during the 12-month program period. Software Engineers in Residence can be existing internal employees who the company is looking to level-up, or a newly hired junior or mid-level developer.
Software Engineers in Residence are Paired with a ZEAL Lead Engineer
The Software Residency pairs Software Engineers in Residence with a ZEAL lead engineer, who works side-by-side on various internal company projects to ensure that the process is followed fully, the work is delivered completely, and the quality standards are met through the length of the program.
Career Growth and Professional Development
The Software Engineers in Residence will participate in ongoing career growth and professional development through educational mentorship and one-on-one coaching at LEARN academy. LEARN also supports the Software Engineer in Residence with ongoing workforce skills training to support long-term talent growth and advancement.

Candidates for the Software Residency are passionate software engineers who are committed to the craft of software development and their continued personal growth and development. Candidates typically have at least 6 months of experience working full time on a professional software development team and demonstrate ambition, an eagerness to learn, and a high capacity to work. Position Title: Software Engineer in Residence
Reports To: Ben Miller, Chief Information Officer

Key Responsibilities:
The Software Engineer in Residence must:
● Fully participate in all software project management activities
● Write, Debug, and Review software source code
● Collaborate with other team members of greater and lesser experience to accomplish collective goals
● Take initiative and demonstrate leadership through idea generation, problem-solving, research, and implementation
● Be committed to learning and experiencing personal and professional growth.
● Mentor other software engineers
Qualifications:
● Professional software development experience with Ruby on Rails
● Professional software development experience with Javascript and React
● Professional experience with agile software development practices
● Professional experience with relational databases
● Experience with Git or other version control systems
● Experience with pair programming
● Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical team members
● Familiarity with object-oriented and functional programming patterns
● Familiarity with GraphQL
● Ability to present complex topics and explain them in simple terms
● Interest in or previous experience teaching technical topics, especially for beginners – this could include conference/meetup talks, or mentoring opportunities.
● Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
● Actively demonstrates ongoing learning through involvement in software development communities, attending conferences, and personal projects
Location of Assignment:
This is a full time, remote position with occasional travel required for company meetings.

Schedule Commitments:
Fine Tune headquarters is located in the Central Time Zone. A candidate should be available to work CT hours (8:00am – 5:00pm CT) with additional hours as needed. Final schedule for the position is flexible and open to discussion.
