KOVE Medical has secured CHF1.6 million in seed funding from angel investors to develop an implantable device designed to reduce the risk of preterm birth following fetal surgery.
While in-utero surgeries, which treat conditions like spina bifida and twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, are considered minimally invasive, fetoscopic instruments often disrupt the fetal membrane, leaving punctures that can lead to preterm delivery.
A University of Zurich spinout, KOVE has developed an implantable device that closes membrane ruptures left after surgery, stabilizing the amniotic sac and helping prevent associated complications.
Launched in 2020, KOVE will use the funding to support its first in-human study to validate the device’s safety and efficacy – aiming to standardize implementation across in-utero procedures.
