Last week many of you joined us as we discussed innovation in the maternal health space during our Inner Circle Webinar. Today we wanted to follow up, share some insights and learnings, and the recording & slides from last week's session.
Let's dive in! 👇
🤰🏿 Why Invest in Maternal Health?
Maternal health plays a crucial role in society, affecting not only the well-being of mothers but also the long-term health of children and communities. As the field of femtech and women's health innovation continues to evolve, addressing the unique needs of expectant and new mothers has become a significant focus. There are many reasons to invest in maternal health:
- Proven and affordable ways of saving the lives of women and children exist (but often aren't accessible)
- It makes economic sense
- It makes the health system work better
🤱🏼 Maternal Health Overview & Challenges
When analyzing the maternal health innovation ecosystem, we've found the following categorization along the patient journey to be helpful.

Maternal health encompasses a wide range of factors, including prenatal care, labor and delivery & postpartum care.
Despite advances in research and (medical) technology, there are still several challenges that persist:
- Limited access to quality prenatal care
- Inadequate healthcare infrastructure and shortage of skilled birth attendants
- Disparities in maternal health outcomes (e.g. racial or socioeconomic)
- High rates of maternal mortality and morbidity
- Lack of mental health support during the perinatal and postpartum period
🔬 Opportunities for Innovation
While these challenges and care gaps are complex, they also present opportunities for innovation. Startups in the maternal health space today are making a difference by focusing on:
- Telehealth and remote monitoring: Leveraging technology to provide virtual consultations, remote monitoring, and telemedicine services can bridge the gap in access to care.
- Data-driven solutions: Harnessing the power of data analytics and artificial intelligence can help identify patterns, predict risks, and personalize care for pregnant women.
- Mental health support: Investing in mental health services tailored specifically for expectant and new mothers is crucial.
- Education and Advocacy: Companies can make a significant impact by investing in community-based, culturally appropriate initiatives that provide education, resources, and support to pregnant women and new mothers.
- Affordable and accessible solutions: Innovation should focus on developing cost-effective solutions that are accessible to all women, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographic location.
🚀 Who's Innovating?
Fortunately, more and more entrepreneurs across the healthcare ecosystem are stepping up to the challenge and driving innovation in the maternal health space.
