Google has announced a new partnership with the Institute of Women’s Cancers, a collaboration between Institut Curie, Université PSL, and Inserm, aimed at improving outcomes for women with breast and gynecological cancers. The partnership will focus on using AI tools to better understand and treat complex cancers, with a particular emphasis on difficult-to-treat conditions like triple-negative breast cancer.

The initiative comes at a critical time, with nearly 60,000 breast cancer cases annually in France and over 2 million women diagnosed globally in 2022. The partnership will combine Institut Curie’s medical expertise with Google’s AI capabilities to predict cancer progression and relapse risks, while also working to identify new biomarkers for treatment effectiveness.

“Combining our expertise in research with Google’s advanced technological capabilities offers hope for significant advancements in our mission to improve our understanding and prediction of cancer’s progression, and develop more effective treatments,” says Anne Vincent-Salomon, director of the Institute of Women’s Cancers.

The collaboration includes several key components:

  • Research into AI-based tools for cancer prediction and treatment
  • AI skills training for professionals at the Institute of Women’s Cancers and Institut Curie
  • YouTube promotion of Institut Curie’s channel to combat misinformation and raise awareness
  • Over $2 million in Google.org funding to Université PSL for applied AI scientific research
  • A postdoctoral research program focused on using AI to improve breast cancer outcomes

The partnership will involve knowledge sharing between Université PSL and Google Research teams, with guidance from Joëlle Barral, senior director of Research at Google DeepMind, and Cédric Denis-Rémis, vice president of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development at Université PSL.
