Spotlight: Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)

Every once in a while a topic pops up that slowly, but surely enters the femtech hive mind and gets us just a tiny bit excited. Today that topic is Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM).

CGM first come on our radar a couple of month ago in connection with Hello Inside, a European startup using CGM to help women manage their hormonal health through personalized nutrition (among other use cases).

And ever since.. It’s sorta been everywhere..

📰 Some recent headlines:

Hello Inside, a CGM x wellness management startup launched in a number of European countries and introduced its new female-focused Hello Hormones program, which we covered here.

Weight Watchers announced a partnership with Abbott, the company behind a market-leading continous glucose monitor. While they are currently focused on members living with diabetes, there could be opportunity to expand.

UK-based Trandermal Diagnostics, a University of Bath spinout, picked up £1.1M to continue work towards commercialization of its needle-free continuous glucose monitor.

Other companies leveraging CGM insights are digital health companies veri and Levels. Levels, which was notably backed by a16z, raised a $38M Series A last April. Finland-based veri raised $4M last year.

✨ As you can tell: It really seems like activity in this space is picking up.
But what exactly is CGM and why should you care? Read on for a short primer! 👇

CONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITORING 101

🤔 What is a continuous glucose monitor?

Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) are small, wearable sensors used to measure your blood sugar throughout the day. They offer real-time insights into how the body reacts to different food and activities such as sleep and exercise. When paired with an app like those offered by veri, Levels or Hello Inside, CGMs can translate these measurements into trends, insights and recommendations.
