The Bioinformatician II is responsible for building and supporting complex bioinformatics software systems that enable human genomics-based products for the NIPT, carrier screening, women’s health, and human disease molecular diagnostics industries. Activities include design, implementation, and testing of genetic analysis methods based on standardized software development processes; develop quality assessment, control, and benchmarking of sequencing assays and analysis methods; and support laboratory operations in a large-scale clinical production environment operated under CLIA regulations and CAP guidelines. Can represent bioinformatics R&D function as a Core Team member, interfacing with peers from other functions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Builds software components according to provided specifications, standards, and procedures that are stand-alone in nature or part of a larger system.
  • Creates of experimental designs, protocols, engineering designs, plans, and procedures with minimal supervisory input.
  • Executes defined protocols, procedures, and data analysis plans.
  • Plans and leads moderately complex development projects involving multiple components and driven by cross-functional initiatives and requirements.
  • Serves as Core Team Member representing R&D for projects governed by the New Product Steering Committee.
  • Industry knowledge and demonstrated product, and process knowledge. Extensive technical expertise required.
  • Coaches/mentors other Associates in a broad scope of technical and product areas.
  • Regularly shares and applies knowledge gained from outside sources of information (scientific literature, patents, regulatory body websites, industry best practice) including integration of competitive information into projects; Stays current on industry/technology trends.
  • Creates, reviews and approves of experimental designs, protocols, engineering designs, plans, procedures, product/process document, and reports to achieve business objectives.
  • Technical lead, troubleshooting, and extensive data analysis within unit of work.
  • Leads by example in following all policies, procedures as required, implements improvements, and corrective measures where needed.
  • May be accountable for lab work or unit of work carried out by other Associates.
  • Leads by example in following all policies, procedures as required and proactively identifies and remedies problems.
  • Leads/facilitates technical and strategic discussions and decision making across functions
  • Authors and drives requirements definition at project/cross functional level.
  • Reviews and provides approval of product specifications.
  • Anticipates and plans for mitigations for product, process, project, and schedule risks.
  • Removes road blocks across unit of work.
  • Drives process improvement ideation, implementation, and sustainment within function; Will also be involved in driving broader scale improvement initiatives.
  • Influences interpretation of internal policies and procedures to minimize effort and time to bring products to market and support existing products in a compliant manner.

  • Accountable for decisions including architecture, resource, schedule, and cost estimates within unit of work.

REQUIREMENTS

  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. degree in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, biophysics, applied mathematics, biostatistics, or a related quantitative field. Ph.D. preferred and other exceptional candidates will be considered.
  • Previous industrial experience preferred.
  • Clear written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively.
  • Quantitative training with basic understanding of probability and statistics.
  • Ability to be self-driven and work well together in a cross-functional and interdisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency working in and developing software for Linux/Unix environments.
  • Proficiency with programming and data analysis in Python.
  • Proficiency with application-level programming languages such as Go, C/C++, Java, etc.
  • Working knowledge of data analysis in R.
  • Prior experience with analysis of next-generation sequencing data, particularly WES or WGS.
  • Experience communicating results and concepts to a diverse audience including geneticists, engineers, laboratory scientists and business development professionals.
  • Experience with high performance computing or cloud-based environments.
  • Familiarity with development and management of complex software pipelines in production clinical environments.
  • Experience in building and deploying software using Docker.
  • Proficiency in summarizing, analysing, and conveying complex information clearly and adjusting communication to the audience.
  • Applies knowledge of industry standards and regulations.
  • Cross functionally recognized as a Subject Matter Expert within a product line across functions.
  • Subject Matter Expert for series of process and products or technology elements.
  • Proficient in risk management concepts.
