The Molecular Technologist – Extraction I works independently but closely with other technical staff, leads, supervisors, and the department manager to perform routine extractions within the Progenity laboratory. The Molecular Technologist – Extraction I may be asked to participate and execute task in support of processes for clinical research or development projects as required within Progenity. This position reports to the Extractions Lead and Laboratory Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Enters data accurately into the Laboratory information system (LIS).
- Documents all quality control activities, instrument maintenance, and calibrations daily.
- Provides information to document incidents and corrective action according to established procedures.
- Ensures all reagents are used within stability and properly labeled with expiration dates as required by SOPs and CAP/CLIA regulations.
- Provides support for laboratory inspections as required by laboratory management.
- Conducts all activities to protect patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA.
- Ensures that all activities and procedures are conducted according to established laboratory procedures and CAP/CLIA guidelines.
- Monitors inventory closely to maintain required levels.
- Performs molecular biology bench-work, including but not limited to: Genomic and Cell-free DNA extraction, maintaining sample storage, sample tracking, quantitation of DNA, and preparation of assay plates following laboratory established SOPs and quality standards with minimal supervision.
- Operates automated liquid handling instrumentation to execute complex high-throughput procedures and troubleshoot as trained according to SOPs.
- Maintains laboratory cleanliness and follows universal precautions according to training and laboratory SOPs.
- Solves routine problems independently within established troubleshooting processes.
- Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or test results and notify Laboratory Supervisor or Laboratory Manager immediately.
- Executes & documents lab corrective action whenever test systems are not acceptable or when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
- Performs other tasks and duties as directed by laboratory management.

REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelors of Science from an accredited medical technology or Life Science program compliant with CLIA 88 requirements for high complexity testing personnel.
- 6+ months clinical laboratory experience preferred.
- Experience in molecular biology preferred.
- Strong working knowledge in MS Office, database systems, and laboratory information systems.
- Demonstrates knowledge of both the practice and the laboratory policies and procedures.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in prioritizing daily work load to accomplish deadlines and meet department goals.
- Must exhibit comfortable interaction with technical staff and other departments.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting.
- Demonstrates good judgement in notifying appropriate staff of deviations from process and unusual results or events.
- Capable of identifying problems using analytical skills to determine the required corrective action.
- Exhibits accurate, complete, and proper laboratory documentation at all times.
- In accordance with HIPAA, this position must maintain the confidentiality of the patient in all circumstances as well as company confidentiality. Ensures the confidentiality of all patient data is maintained.
