We seek a leader to drive the Scientific Computing Group (SCG) who can partner with our scientific and technical/data teams to enhance and drive the acceleration of this transformation. This role will report directly to the Head of IT Engineering Systems and Product Development with a dotted line to the CIO. The role is responsible for driving a vision, team and technology to evolve our scientific and research computing platforms (Research, Laboratories, and other innovative initiatives).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and aligns partners on a vision and roadmap for the scientific computing needs of R&D, technologies and capabilities to support and accelerate Progenity research goals.
  • Leads and builds a high performing team of scientific technology personnel, execution and maintenance for all scientific computing and including genomics, inventory management, regulatory tools, LIMS and others.
  • Identifies opportunities for technical and process improvement and initiate the necessary research or development work in relation to scientific computing; this includes high level evaluation of state-of-the-art hardware, software, and protocols, applicability and risks.
  • Manages assigned scientific computing budget and forecast Demonstrated ability to think strategically about business, product, and technical challenges.
  • Delivers solutions that are practical, flexible, scalable, reusable, strategic and are achieved through the application of industry proven architectural principles, standards and governance.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Advanced degrees (Masters/ PhD/ MBA) or equivalent experience in both scientific (bioinformatics, genomics) and technology domains.
  • Relevant experience in creating and applying technologies to solve computationally intensive and data intensive in any of the following: bioinformatics, clinical informatics, distributed and high-performance computing, large scale data transfer, and data visualization.
  • Minimum ten (10) years in progressive roles supporting research computing needs in a genetics organization.
  • Minimum six (6) years in a leadership role of 8 or more staff is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of large-scale scientific data and methods of management.
  • Experience with high performance computing and storage such as distributed computing systems, cloud computing, third-party vendor platforms.
  • Experience of successfully developing and implementing IT strategy. Preferably within a complex scientific research organization.
  • In depth technical knowledge and experience across broad range of IT specialist areas, including programming, systems architecture, high performance computing, high performance storage and networking technologies.
  • Expertise in successful development and delivery of multiple complex scientific technology development initiatives.
  • Experience with software specification, development and maintenance in a high-performance computing environment.
  • Experience with large scale data management and archiving.
  • Demonstrable ability to lead diverse teams within a complex and challenging customer service environment.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to produce strategic documents, present ideas and solutions to non-technical audience and listen effectively to understand user needs.
  • Ability to produce effective project management briefings to senior staff.
  • Ability to plan and manage budgets.
  • Self-motivated, interested in world class computing systems and the development best practice techniques.
  • Ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels. Is a team player. Ability and initiative to solve problems.
  • Ability to ask questions, constantly learn, adapt, and evolve.
