Irish femtech startup Joii has raised €2.4 million to launch its AI-powered menstrual monitoring solution that measures period blood volume and clot sizes through specialized pads and mobile app analysis. The Dublin-based company has developed what it says is the first technology to provide quantified menstrual health data through image analysis.

Joii’s system combines specially designed evaluation pads with a mobile app that uses artificial intelligence to analyze scanned images of used pads. The technology provides users with precise measurements of flow volume in milliliters, clot detection, and cycle trend analysis, addressing the lack of objective data in menstrual health monitoring.

“For too long, women have been told to just ‘track their period’ without any real tools to measure what’s actually happening. With Joii, we’re changing that,” said founder Justyna Strzeszynska. “We’re helping people see their periods clearly, for the first time.”

The solution targets heavy menstrual bleeding, which affects one in three women but often faces delayed diagnosis due to subjective descriptions like “heavy” or “normal.” Joii aims to introduce objective measurements to accelerate diagnosis and treatment, particularly for conditions like endometriosis, which can take up to 10 years to diagnose.

The technology holds Class I Medical Device certification in the UK and is protected by multiple patents. Clinical validation through studies funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research demonstrated significant user outcomes: 62% of users reported improved communication with healthcare providers, symptom screening efficacy increased by 288%, and menstrual health literacy rose by 134%.

Joii is partnering with institutions to develop predictive models for menstrual conditions including endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome, positioning menstrual blood as a diagnostic tool. The company has secured support from clinical advisors including Dr. Fatema Mustansir Dawoodbhoy from the NHS and Dr. Kushal Chummun, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The app is available free on iOS and Android platforms, while Joii Evaluation Pads retail for €6.95 through health stores, pharmacies, and online sales. The company has secured distribution partnerships with retailers including Wholefoods Wholesale Ireland.

“By combining smart technology with a clinically tested menstrual pad, Joii empowers users to measure their period volume and better understand their symptoms,” said Ronan O’Flynn, Sales Manager at Wholefoods Wholesale Ireland.

The funding supports Joii’s expansion as the company addresses what it sees as a significant gap in women’s health technology. While wearable devices track various health metrics, menstrual health has lacked quantifiable monitoring tools despite its clinical relevance for broader women’s health issues.
