The Molecular Laboratory Technologist-Clinical Intern position is for students of colleges and universities with internship courses that offer the student the opportunity to gain experience in a professional laboratory work setting. The period of the internship will be defined by the internship agreement on file with the educational institution. The scope of work during the internship period can be found in the goals and competencies document that will be created/approved for each student and may be unique to each intern based on their degree program. All work will be performed under the direct observation and supervision of a Progenity Molecular Laboratory Technologist.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Gains an understanding of laboratory and building safety at Progenity.

Gains an understanding of critical laboratory quality control and quality assurance measures in the laboratory.

Gains an understanding of good documentation practices in the laboratory.

Gains an understanding of the different types of samples Progenity receives for in-house testing.

Gains experience with receiving specimens and preparing specimens for accessioning.

Gains experience with the specimen accessioning process and order look-up in the LIS.

Participates in the pipetting workshop training.

Participates in monthly journal club.

Gains an understanding of DNA extraction for the carrier screening assay.

Gains an understanding of next-generation sequencing by observing the carrier screening assay.

Gains experience with maintenance and setup of the Illumina HiSeq 2500 instrument.

Gains experience with capillary electrophoresis testing.

REQUIREMENTS

Associate’s Degree or 60 semester credit hours in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Biological Sciences or a related field.

Compliant with CLIA 88 requirements for High Complexity testing personnel preferred, but not required.

Working toward completion of Bachelor’s Degree in CLS, Biological Sciences, Molecular Diagnostics or other life science discipline.

Must have completed relevant laboratory coursework.

Must be able to handle a wide work variety and work in a fast paced environment.

Must be a detail-oriented, organized, self-starter, and have an ability to prioritize workload.
