Setting a new standard in menopause care to support every woman

About this role
Alva’s got big ambitions, and this means testing some big assumptions. There’s often a lot of ambiguity day-to-day, and we want someone who can not just survive but thrive within this. To excel here, you’ll be excited by simplifying some really complex problems. You’ll also be able to ruthlessly prioritise – working on the highest impact things. We take our learnings by speaking to our users directly – and this will be a big part of what you do at Alva.

As Alva’s designer, you’ll be responsible for the look and feel of Alva’s consumer facing and internal products. You’ll be the only designer in the team – but you’re not alone. Our product team has design experience and you’ll be working collaboratively with them to find the best solutions for our users.

We’re a tight-knit team of 7. This means everyone takes on a large amount of responsibility for their area of expertise. Our designer will need to be comfortable taking a brief and pushing it along relatively independently, whilst being reflective enough to recognise when they need more input. You’ll work with everyone in the team, especially on user testing and insight, but this role will report directly into Phil (Alva’s CTO)

What you’ll be doing
-Working on the full spectrum of design problems – from initial sketches through to shipping great products.
-Prototyping to clearly communicate requirements to the product team
-Creating production-ready designs (incl. assets) to allow for a smooth handover with engineers.
-Working with the product team to ensure the technical feasibility of designs and reviewing the implementations of your designs.
-Developing new features and ideas, as well as improving our current beta product and platform. You’ll measure your design solutions with qualitative and quantitative methods.
-User research, including communicating your learnings to the whole team.
-Precisely articulating design rationale to all members of the team.
-Developing and maintaining our accessibility-first design system from the ground up. You’ll also play a key role in evolving Alva’s visual identity over time.
-Working closely with all team members to help frame problems and define solutions.
-Giving and receiving design critique to ensure Alva’s constantly creating the best products we can.
-Helping us build Alva – we’re a small team and sometimes its “all hands on deck”. We want a real team player, who is flexible to support things beyond their role.

Experience and skills
-Minimum of 2 years working in a small team environment (ideally a high-growth startup). We want someone who is energised by the pace, ambiguity and ambition of early stage ventures.
you may not have all the skills (yet) but you’re hungry to learn. You’ve got 3+ years of first-hand experience in interface and user experience design at a consumer product company. Healthcare experience is a bonus, not a requirement.
-A ****strong understanding of UX and UI principles and best practices. Ideally familiarity with accessibility best practices.
-Great attention to detail. A real passion for the craft and a desire to raise the bar.
-A passion for user-centred design and show genuine empathy for the end users of our products.
-Happy working independently, but enjoys collaborating with the team.
-Strong ability to plan your own work, and problem solve. We don’t have product managers – we need everyone to think like their own.
-You think in systems and flows, not isolated pages/features. You’re motivated by taking a long term, scaleable approach – creating reusable elements, components and systems.
-Along with core principles of product design, you’d ideally also have a deep understanding of composition, typography, balance, symmetry, and white space.
-You look for solutions, rather than identifying problems.
-You can communicate your thoughts and motivations clearly.
-You are ego-free and can give and take feedback constructively.
-At this time we can only offer roles to people who have the right to live and work in the UK
